What is Silver Lining Preschool’s policy on child inoculations?
To help prevent serious illnesses, the State of California requires all children enrolled at the center to have all of the recommended vaccinations (DPT/DT, measles, rubella, hepatitis B, Hib, and polio), as well as their TB immunization dates on the child’s FIRST day of preschool. You will be notified immediately if your child is in need of further immunizations, and it is your responsibility to make sure your child receives the appropriate immunizations. We require a Physician's Statement of Inoculations Received within 30 days of enrollment.
How does Silver Lining Preschool handle child emergencies?
Our staff receives periodic in-service first aid and pediatric CPR training so they can act quickly and accurately in an emergency. Your physician's name and number are kept near the phone and will be called immediately if your child requires professional medical care. It is imperative that all emergency information is accurate and up to date in your file. Please note that it is your responsibility to let the staff know of any change of personal information.
What if our child needs medicine?
We will give your child prescription medicine only according to your written and signed instructions. All medicine must be in the original container with your child's full name on it. Please do not ask us to give more than the prescribed dosage, as this is impossible as well as illegal. Appropriate non-prescription medicine will be given for a limited time only (3 days) and never on an "as needed" basis. The center cannot give any medicine, including aspirin, without your signed authorization. Please check your child’s over-the-counter medication to be sure it has not expired and is age-appropriate for your child, as we can only administer medication according to the original label. PLEASE REMEMBER… We are not doctors or nurses; therefore, it is understood that you alone are responsible for the medication needs of your children.
What is Silver Lining Preschool’s child illness policy?
We are strictly licensed to care for well, ambulatory children. We do not have the nursing staff or specialized facilities to care for children who have a communicable illness, or are too ill to take part in regular center activities; nor are we allowed to. We ask that you not to bring your child to the center if he/she has had an elevated temperature during the past 24 hours, or has experienced diarrhea or vomiting. Please keep your child home if he/she has a heavy nasal discharge or constant cough.
Any time your child becomes ill during the day, a staff member will call you and you will be asked to come for your child. If you cannot be reached, we will call one of the friends or relatives you have listed to contact in case of emergencies. An ill child will be isolated and cared for until the child's representative comes for him/her. For the health and safety of the other children, if we send a child home with a fever of 101 degrees or above, the child may not attend the program the following day without a Doctor’s clearance.
Parents have a serious responsibility to the other families participating in the program to keep children with certain illnesses at home, and to notify the center about certain illnesses requiring special handling. If children have communicable diseases, (measles, etc.) we need to alert other parents and staff so they can look out for symptoms with their own children. Please use common courtesy and protect the other families and staff from any and all communicable illnesses. To keep your child healthy through the winter, when most respiratory infections occur, be sure he/she gets plenty of rest, eats a well-balanced diet, and drinks plenty of fluids.
What if we want to celebrate our child’s birthday with his or her classmates?
At Silver Lining, we understand that birthdays are big events, especially when you’ve only had a few! For this reason, if your child would like to share his/her special day with us, we would be more than happy to include a special treat from your home for our snack. Please let your child’s teacher know, so we can be sure to include the treat in our snack schedule. Due to our busy schedule, and the desire for each child to receive equal treatment, we cannot accommodate a “party” for your child. You are, however, more than welcome to drop invitations for your own party in the folders of your child’s friends. Thank you for understanding our position.
What discipline method do you promote?
Whenever a child at the center disrupts others by taking toys, hitting, biting, or creating dangerous situations, our staff uses a teaching method we call "time out." This method of helping children learn how to get along with other children is very gentle and acceptable to parents and teachers; while at the same time being effective in minimizing disruptions. In time out, a disruptive child is told what he/she did wrong and what s/he should have done instead and is asked to sit at the edge of the children's activity and watch the other children. After one minute per year of age of sitting quietly, the child is invited to return to the others and is reminded of what the correct behavior is. The teacher keeps watch for the first opportunity to praise the child for getting along well with the other children. We believe in taking a positive approach to discipline, and like to keep school situations at school unless chronic. Your child’s teacher, after conferring with the director, may request a conference with you in order to gain useful ideas or tools on how to meet your child’s particular needs.
Can our child be expelled from Silver Lining Preschool?
At the discretion of the Director, and after reasonable effort on the part of the childcare staff to integrate the child into the school, a child's participation may be terminated without notice if that child is deemed violent, destructive, or chronically disruptive to the functioning of the school. The Director, after consulting the Teacher, will confer with the parents and give notification of termination 5 school days prior to termination. Any balance of payment after the 5th school day’s notification shall be refunded. A child's participation may also be terminated if a child is regularly picked up after the scheduled pick-up time, or if your child's fees are not paid and/or he/she has not attended school. Another registration fee and any delinquent fees need to be paid before your child resumes school. Termination may also result if parent or guardian fails to honor the obligations listed in this handbook, or in any rules, regulations, or manuals provided by the school. Either party may cancel without notice during the first two weeks: or during the two week trial period. After that trial period, a two-week's notice must be given by the terminating party (parent may pay the two weeks' fees instead of giving notice).
Are there any fee adjustments for the week days that the school is closed?
Because our cost of operation does not vary with individual absences or illness, we cannot make individual adjustments in fees. Any savings to us by closing the center for holidays are spread over the entire year to keep your regular fees as low as possible.
How much do you charge me if the bank returns my check?
There is a $25.00 service charge for ALL returned (bounced) checks. If your check is returned, you must pay with cash or money order. If your check is returned 2 times within 12 months, we will only be able to accept cash or money orders from you in the future.
What if our child is absent?
If your child will not be joining us at school on a scheduled day, for any reason, we ask that you please call the center before 8:30 a.m. so that we know how many children to plan for on that day. If the absence is called in before 8:30 .a.m., you will have what is considered a “make up day.” This means that you may choose another day during that same month for your child to attend, and only if space is available. This applies to part-time students only, as full time students have a substantial saving in their fees to offset this expense. You will be responsible to pay for every day you reserve for your child, orally or in writing, even if he/she does not attend that day.
How do we update our child’s information?
Parents agree to inform the school at once of any changes to the information contained on the forms completed prior to admission. Periodic updates of personal information will be conducted during the year to keep our records current as required by law. Failure to assist us in being fully compliant with these requirements may result in a child’s dismissal from the Silver Lining Preschool Program. Please note that all personal information is kept strictly confidential, and cannot be released by us under any circumstance except as noted below:
INSPECTION AUTHORITY SECTION 101195(b)(c)
(b) The Department or licensing agency shall have the authority to interview clients, including children or staff, and to inspect and audit client and facility records without prior consent.
(c) The Department or licensing agency shall have the authority to observe the physical condition of the client, including conditions which could indicate abuse, neglect, or inappropriate placement, and to have a licensed medical professional physician examine the client.
What is the school’s policy on bringing toys from home?
We have two share days each month. These are the only days your child should bring toys, books, tapes, etc. from home. Silver Lining Preschool will not be responsible for any lost toys or other personal property. NEVER bring guns, knives, swords, war toys or other toys that may encourage aggression, including superhero action figures, as we repeatedly find that they present a disruptive influence to our effort in promoting a soothing co-operative environment.
